I was changing the oil today and noticed some shreds of belt sticking out of the alternator cover, I took it off and there was only two strands left holding my belt together. Not sure what caused it, the machine has about 5k miles on it.

I’ve never seen one fail, but apparently they collect debris in the bottom.

Wow, I’ve never seen that before. Even my XP which had just a little over 4k miles on it, looked just fine. I guess I’ll need to check mine around the 2K mile mark just in case. I wonder if we need to start carrying serpentine belts instead of drive belts. I was hoping to not have to carry or worry about having a spare belt on hand with these machines.

These are a stretch belt. No tentioner. Don’t know how easy it would be to change on the trail.

I think it Will be pretty easy. Looks like you can put belt over the pulleys and start it over the crank and just turn the crank to get it on.

I would think something had to get into the case to do that kind of damage. I thought it was sealed to prevent this.

There was a member that buried their's in a mud hole that took the belt out. He also had his engine toast shortly after

That looks like a " must have ".
So I buy one, place it in the "appropriate " storage place, and down the road when I have to change the belt I completely forgot I own this special tool.
Yup, that's what I do
Zip ties work just fine. And a tap on the key.

If you’re like me, you would find the first one you bought immediately after buying a second one.
